There are a few well known techniques for determining the durability of moving boxes, the most popular of those being the Edge Crust Test.

An Edge Crust Test Rating is calculated by compressing a small section of cardboard until a peak load can be determined. A moving box’s ECT Rating is calculated in terms of maximum pounds per square inch and is usually written as an integer followed by ECT. For example, a 32 ECT storage box can withstand the force of 32 pounds per square inch before it is crushed.

How do you know whether or not a cardboard box is durable enough to be used for moving? The first thing you can do is check the bottom of the box for the manufacturer’s label. If there is no label, or the label does not list the box’s ECT rating then it might not be suitable for moving.
